Uber announced it will acquire SpotHero, North America’s leading parking reservation app, in a move to embed parking directly into the Uber platform. The deal, with financial terms undisclosed, is expected to close in the first half of 2026 pending regulatory approval, and will give Uber users access to SpotHero’s network of over 13,000 garages, lots, and valet services across 400+ U.S. and Canadian cities. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi framed the move as serving users who still choose to drive themselves, saying SpotHero will “bring more people into the Uber ecosystem.”

  • SpotHero was founded in 2011 and last raised outside funding in 2019, a $50 million round led by Macquarie Capital, making this acquisition a significant exit for the Chicago-based startup.

  • Uber’s market cap currently sits at $146 billion, dwarfing Lyft’s $5 billion valuation, giving the company significant firepower for ecosystem-expanding acquisitions.

  • Uber One subscribers are expected to receive additional perks tied to the parking feature once the deal closes, deepening the value proposition of its membership program.

Seattle Drivers Union Sounds Alarm on Oversaturation, Cratering Wages

A Washington state drivers union, affiliated with Teamsters Local 117, released a report warning that Uber and Lyft are onboarding far more drivers than rider demand requires, driving wages into the ground and increasing congestion. In Seattle, the number of ride-hailing drivers is growing seven times faster than actual trips, and in 2024, a staggering 55% of all ride-hailing miles driven were logged without a passenger. One 12-year Uber veteran reported his annual earnings collapsed from $55,000 in 2022 to just $24,000 in 2025, giving just five to six rides per day compared to 20–25 previously.

  • The report, partly funded by Washington’s Department of Ecology, found that empty “deadheading” miles per trip nearly tripled from 3.5 miles in 2019 to 9.9 miles in 2024, contributing to increased air pollution and traffic congestion.

  • The union is not calling for driver layoffs, but rather a pause on new driver onboarding and greater data transparency from the companies, pointing to Chicago’s public ride data dashboard as a model Seattle should adopt.

  • Uber pushed back, arguing the report relied on a small, unrepresentative sample of 212 drivers, and blamed Seattle’s minimum pay regulations for a 40% spike in rider fares that it says dampened demand.

Uber Air and Joby Aviation Launch Booking Partnership, Eye 2028 LA Olympics

Uber has unveiled a partnership with Joby Aviation that will allow riders to book all-electric air taxis directly inside the Uber app. Uber Air launches first in Dubai later in 2026, with expansion plans targeting Los Angeles, New York City, the U.K., and Japan, with a key goal of being operational for the 2028 LA Olympic Games. Pricing for the aerial segment will be comparable to an Uber Black fare, with full all-inclusive per-passenger pricing shown upfront before booking.

  • Joby’s eVTOL aircraft carry four passengers, travel up to 200 mph with a 100-mile range per charge, and use triple-redundant flight computers and four independent battery packs for safety compliance with FAA standards.

  • The full trip is booked in one tap: an Uber Black picks you up, the Joby aircraft handles the flight from a vertiport, and another Uber meets you at the destination, no separate app needed.

  • Joby and Uber have already logged more than 50,000 miles of flight testing and are in the final stage of FAA type certification, which must be completed before U.S. commercial operations can begin.

Opinion: Uber’s California Ballot Measure Shields the Company, Not Riders

A California op-ed argues that Uber’s proposed ballot initiative, framed publicly as protection against “billboard lawyers,” is in fact designed to limit victims’ ability to sue the company over safety failures, including those caused by negligent drivers. The measure would cap attorney compensation in ways that effectively price serious injury victims out of legal representation, particularly in cases involving large medical liens that would eat into the limited attorney fee pool.

  • The 2018 Uber robotaxi fatality in Arizona, the first pedestrian death caused by a self-driving car, resulted in an NTSB finding of “inadequate safety culture,” with the vehicle detecting the pedestrian 6 seconds before impact but failing to brake.

  • Under the proposed law, Uber and its insurers could deploy unlimited legal resources with no penalty for delays or frivolous defenses, while victims face strict caps on legal fee structures.

  • Uber’s autonomous vehicle partner Nuro had logged only 210,540 miles in California as of a 2024 DMV report, a fraction of the hundreds of millions of miles experts say are needed to statistically validate AV safety.

Uber Eats Locks In Tips Upfront, Sparking Customer Backlash

Source: Daily Mail

Uber Eats has updated its platform to remove customers’ ability to reduce a tip after placing an order, a direct response to widespread “tip baiting,” where riders lure drivers with large tips and then slash them post-delivery. While drivers have long demanded protections against the practice, some customers are now complaining that there is no recourse when service is genuinely poor, though Uber Eats says customers can contact support to reduce or remove a tip after the fact. The change highlights a growing tension between protecting driver earnings and maintaining customer flexibility on delivery platforms.

  • Tip baiting has been an issue on Uber Eats, with drivers reporting that base pay can be as low as $2 per delivery, making tips a critical, and vulnerable, portion of their income.

  • Customers can still increase a tip after delivery within the app, but reductions now require contacting Uber Eats support directly.

  • Competing platforms DoorDash and Grubhub do not allow post-delivery tip reductions, meaning Uber Eats is now aligned with industry norms.
