RoadieXDTM Review

RoadieXD™ Review

Roadie is a crowdsourced delivery platform in the U.S. that connects businesses of all sizes with a network of independent drivers to provide flexible, efficient, and reliable deliveries.

In 2021, UPS acquired Roadie to expand into same-day delivery solutions. Roadie operates as a standalone entity.

The Roadie network includes more than 200,000 independent contractor drivers nationwide. This enables retailers to offer same-day delivery of items of all sizes, including large and bulky goods, making it a versatile solution for retailers and their customers alike.

Leading retailers use the Roadie platform to offer same-day delivery services to their customers. Additionally, four of the five biggest U.S. airlines use the Roadie platform to help them deliver mishandled luggage.

What is RoadieXD™?

Over the years, Roadie has expanded its delivery solutions and offerings for customers and drivers alike. One such delivery solution is called RoadieXD™.

RoadieXD™ is a cross-docking solution enabling retailers to offer their customers efficient same-day delivery for items of all sizes, including oversized and bulky goods. RoadieXD™ is perfect for drivers with larger vehicles such as cargo vans, box trucks, etc.

With RoadieXD™, drivers can earn bigger payouts by choosing multi-stop Gigs on the app’s map as well as longer routed Gigs performed during a particular block of time scheduled in advance (sometimes referred to as a scheduled “Block”).

RoadieXD™ offers drivers single-location warehouse pickups and advanced scheduling options,  giving the driver even more flexibility to shape their day as they see fit. Currently, drivers must be certified to complete RoadieXD™ Gigs. RoadieXD™ Gigs appear on the Roadie app, the same as regular Roadie Gigs.

How Do Drivers Get RoadieXD™ Certified?

RoadieXD™ is currently available in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Orlando, Miami, Philadelphia, Oakland, Minneapolis, and Dallas, with plans to expand to numerous more by the end of 2025. So, if it’s not available in your city yet, keep an eye on expansion to your market in the near future. Meanwhile, you can still find deliveries to complete on the standard Roadie platform.

Interested drivers should first create a driver account on the Roadie app and upload proof of insurance to their profile. Drivers, of course, also need the correct kind of vehicle in order to perform these deliveries – larger vehicles that can handle RoadieXD™ deliveries, such a box truck, cargo van, sprinter van, etc.– before RoadieXD™ offers will be available to them on the platform.

After signing up as a driver, you can click here to check your eligibility for  RoadieXD™.

RoadieXD™ drivers must be comfortable driving from 2 to 7 hours at a time and be able to single-handily maneuver items weighing up to 200 pounds. They also need to have their own equipment to do so, such as a dolly, hand-truck and lift-gate. RoadieXD™ drivers must arrive at the cross-dock with their driver’s license, the vehicle listed in their profile and all proper equipment.

Other driver requirements for RoadieXD™ include:

  • Wear closed-toed shoes

  • No passengers (except helpers who are also RoadieXD™certified)

  • Animals are prohibited (excluding registered service animals)

  • Safety vests are required (the crew at the warehouse can provide one)

When you show up to the warehouse, have the Batch ID ready so the warehouse worker can grab the correct batch for you to load onto your vehicle.

Drive Big, Earn Big!

One big question drivers always have is, “How much can I make?” Well, with RoadieXD™, drivers can earn even more.

Multi-stop RoadieXD™ Gigs that are not scheduled ahead of time pay up to $200 per route, with most of the Gigs available averaging $100. The amount offered per Gig is determined by the mileage, size of the items, and the number of deliveries in the multi-stop delivery.

On the other hand, the scheduled Block model guarantees earnings starting at $200 for a 6- to 8-hour time block, depending on cross-dock location.

If you don’t have a vehicle that is suitable for RoadieXD™ Gigs, you can rent larger vehicles, or in the future, consider purchasing a larger vehicle specifically for bigger deliveries. Hertz offers an average of 20% savings on rentals of vehicles of all sizes to all drivers using the Roadie platform. (Check the “Promotions” section of the app for more details!)

How the Roadie App Works

Once you are certified, you’ll have more power in your hands.

Once you open the Roadie app, you’ll see the Gig Map, which includes opportunities to make deliveries of all types. These opportunities can be for single Gigs, multi-stop Gigs and RoadieXD™ Gigs. If you see one you like, you can “offer” on that Gig. If multiple drivers offer, Roadie’s proprietary algorithm finds the best driver for that Gig according to several criteria and matches them.

One of the biggest differences between using Roadie and other courier and delivery apps is that a driver never needs to offer to perform any Gig at any time. You only have to offer on the Gigs you want to take.

Also, another difference between Roadie and other apps is that you always see the exact amount the Gig (or scheduled Block) pays upfront. You can also see a suggested route, all information about the items in the Gig and the number of stops all upfront. It’s not a guess or estimate (except where an estimate is required to be provided under applicable law, i.e., in California and Seattle) but the actual amount a driver earns upon completion of the Gig.

For all kinds of Roadie Gigs, you can choose to receive weekly payouts via direct deposit, processed every Wednesday, or sooner via Instant Pay (if eligible). When you sign up to use Roadie, you’ll be automatically set for weekly deposits.

To qualify for Instant Pay, you must have delivered at least 5 Gigs and have been an active driver for more than 7 days. Keep in mind that canceled Gigs do not count towards that benchmark, and according to Roadie, batched Gigs count as a single Gig.

RoadieXD™ Gigs

With a RoadieXD™ certification, you’ll get access to RoadieXD™ Gigs, which are always multi-stop deliveries that are picked up from warehouses (cross-docks) for maximum efficiency. You can easily find RoadieXD™ Gigs on the map in the Roadie app, labeled “RoadieXD,” with clear breakdowns of the earnings for the Gig, all stops in the Gig, and total estimated mileage for all stops in the Gig.

The main downside to using Roadie is that it is a popular app and no driver is ever guaranteed to be matched with any Gig. With multiple drivers offering on the same Gigs, there are many reasons why the algorithm matches another driver. To increase your chances of being matched, you can offer on multiple Gigs at once. The algorithm generally matches a driver within 15 minutes of their bid, and a driver can cancel their bid for a brief time after being matched with no penalty.

Scheduled Blocks for RoadieXD™

If you choose to do scheduled Blocks, an option that is exclusive to XL vehicle drivers (box truck, cargo van, sprinter van, etc.), you’ll be able to secure pre-scheduled time slots for RoadieXD™ Gigs. The flexible scheduling for RoadieXD™ Blocks allows you, as the driver, to easily sign up, drop, or get on a waitlist for available Blocks using the app.

Once you sign up for a RoadieXD™ Block, you are guaranteed to be matched with a RoadieXD™ Gig during that Block. If there’s a waitlist option, you’ll be put on a waitlist. RoadieXD™ Blocks pay by the Block, and the money you’ll earn upon completion of the Block is what you saw in the app. If you sign up for a $200 Block, that’s the money you’ll receive for the Block upon completion of all your RoadieXD™ Gigs for the day.

Before you are confirmed on a Block, you don’t have any information about the available RoadieXD™ Gigs. You are not told how many deliveries you’ll be making or the exact addresses of where they will be picked up or dropped off. Once on a scheduled RoadieXD™ Block, you’ll be notified one hour prior to its start time of the address of the cross-dock where you’ll be going to pick up the orders for delivery.

Both batched RoadieXD™ Gigs and RoadieXD™ Blocks offer you flexibility so you can drive on your own schedule. You can plan ahead with Blocks or be more spontaneous.

Roadie customers have a high demand for drivers with large vehicles to provide them with RoadieXD™ delivery services, so RoadieXD™ certified drivers are prioritized, giving you more substantial earnings.

What Drivers Are Saying

Drivers who have used Roadie and RoadieXD™ tend to find RoadieXD™ to be a beneficial option for them. On Reddit and YouTube, drivers who use Roadie and RoadieXD™ had lots of feedback on the platform.

One said he made $165 for about 2.5 hours worth of work delivering 7 Gigs upon the launch of a cross-dock in his city. However, some did indicate that their earnings have gone down over the months as the operations have become better established in their market.

Drivers also mentioned the added convenience of being automatically eligible for certification once RoadieXD™ was available in their city because they had an approved vehicle and they were already using the Roadie platform.

One negative is that drivers have mentioned that pickups at the warehouse can be inefficient and untimely, especially immediately after RoadieXD™ is first launched in their city. However, this process gets more efficient over time as more drivers get established and learn the systems and processes for pickup at the particular cross dock.

Here’s a screenshot of one driver’s earnings:

RoadieXD™ also offers drivers the flexibility to deliver in the order that makes the most sense to them. All routes are suggested by third-party software – drivers can choose which item to drop off next to find a route that works best for them instead of the one the map automatically shows after the driver is matched to the Gig.

One insider tip from drivers is that offering on multi-stop Gigs (and RoadieXD™ Gigs when certified) is the way to go because it’s more efficient than having to put in a bunch of bids and chasing orders all over town. You still have to submit a bid on the batch, but just one, and it’ll give you more to do and with a bigger payout in one go rather than waiting around and offering on a bunch of smaller Gigs.

Another tip: If you’re taking a big batch, take time loading your vehicle. You’ll be in a better spot overall if you’ve got your van organized by groupings of where each order is going so you can be more efficient once you hit the road. Plan ahead. Remember, you load your own vehicle, so you can organize it however, it makes most sense to you.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve got a qualified, larger vehicle, RoadieXD™ is a highly competitive opportunity. Check out the RoadieXDTM page to see if there is a cross-dock in your area. If there isn’t yet, there might be one soon, so check back often. Also, if you’re already using the Roadie app with a large vehicle listed in your profile, you might be automatically eligible to become RoadieXD™ certified once it comes to your city.
