Data from S&P Global Mobility forecasts there will be over 300% growth in the rideshare market between now and 2040. The firm predicts annual rideshare trips will quadruple from 3.6 billion in 2024 to 15 billion by 2040, where robotaxis and human-driven vehicles will play crucial roles in meeting future demand.

  • S&P predicts that humans will still give roughly half of all rideshare trips in 2040.

  • The firm says Gen Z and Gen Alpha will increasingly opt for on-demand transportation for daily commutes, mirroring their preference for subscription-based services in other aspects of life. This growth is primarily driven by users in urban areas where there may be challenges with car ownership.

  • Despite concerns about the growth of robotaxis, the report shows that the effect on human rideshare drivers has been minimal so far.

72% of Lyft drivers have a traditional job or are looking for a job outside of rideshare, according to Lyft’s latest Economic Impact Report. It also revealed that 91% of drivers drive fewer than 20 hours per week, showing only a small percentage of drivers are actually working full time.

  • On average, drivers stayed online for 88 minutes per session.

  • Over 40% of Lyft trips start or end in low-income areas, 44% of Lyft riders use the service to connect to public transit, and 34% of Lyft’s micromobility users connect to public transit via shared bikes and scooters.

  • 58% of drivers reported taking a break longer than two consecutive weeks, showing that drivers will take substantial breaks from rideshare to eventually return.

California Proposes Union Rights for Rideshare Drivers

California lawmakers have introduced AB 1340, backed by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which would allow rideshare drivers to unionize. The proposal aims to give drivers the right to bargain for better pay and benefits while remaining independent contractors, potentially affecting over 600,000 drivers statewide.

  • This move comes after previous attempts to expand gig workers’ rights, including AB 5 and Proposition 22, with mixed results.

  • Some labor advocates argue the proposal should go further, including setting a minimum wage floor and protecting the right to strike.

  • The bill is seen as a compromise between full employee status and the current independent contractor model established by Prop 22.

Study Suggests Racial Disparities in Traffic Citations for Rideshare Drivers

A new study using Lyft driver data in Florida suggests that minority drivers are more likely to receive traffic tickets and pay higher fines compared to white drivers. The research, which analyzed data from over 222,000 Lyft drivers, found no evidence that minority drivers were more prone to speeding or unsafe driving, suggesting that the disparity is due to bias against minority drivers.

  • Minority Lyft drivers were approximately 30% more likely to be pulled over and cited for speeding and received 23-34% higher fines when cited.

  • The study used GPS data to track speeding and accidents as a proxy for driving habits, finding no significant differences between minority and white drivers.

  • Researchers conclude that the disparity is likely due to “animus or prejudice against minority drivers” on the part of law enforcement.

Colorado Bill Proposes Mandatory Video Monitoring for Rideshare Vehicles

Colorado’s House Bill 1291 proposes mandatory continuous video and audio recording for all Uber and Lyft rides to enhance passenger safety. The bill, which passed its first hearing with bipartisan support, would require rideshare companies to install and pay for recording systems in all vehicles. The legislation aims to improve driver verification and provide evidence for investigating passenger complaints.

  • The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Jenny Willford, is a sexual assault survivor who is currently suing Lyft over inadequate safety protocols.

  • The legislation also bans drivers from offering food or drinks to passengers and removes an earlier provision for fingerprint-based background checks due to budget constraints.

  • While facing opposition from companies like Uber and civil liberties groups, the bill has garnered support from organizations such as AARP and the Colorado Women’s Bar Association.
