Massachusetts Drivers Claim Earnings Drop Despite New Minimum Wage

Source – Boston Globe
Despite a new minimum wage of $32.50 per hour for rideshare drivers in Massachusetts, many Uber and Lyft drivers report a decline in overall earnings, according to a new report from the Boston Globe. They attribute this to increased hours needed to reach pre-minimum wage earnings and the new wage acting as a cap rather than a floor.
Drivers report that while they aren’t earning below the new minimum, it has become harder to exceed it, with many attributing this to fewer high-paying rides and a decrease in surge pricing.
Some drivers speculate that AI algorithms may be adjusting fare offers to keep wages around the minimum. Sergio Avedian, RSG Senior Contributor, contributed to the Globe story, saying he’s heard complaints from “cherry pickers” experiencing pay cuts.
Both Uber and Lyft state that overall driver pay has increased under the new structure.
Waymo’s Dual Role as Competitor and Partner for Uber, Austin Interest List Opens

SOURCE – The New York Times, CNBC
A new article in The New York Times explores Waymo’s dual role as a competitor and partner for Uber. While Uber is actively expanding its autonomous vehicle partnerships with multiple companies, Waymo has emerged as one of its key partners, as well as a competitive force.
Uber has opened an “interest list” for Waymo’s robotaxi rides in Austin, allowing users to experience driverless rides through the Uber app soon. This marks a significant collaboration, utilizing Waymo’s Jaguar i-Pace vehicles with Uber branding.
While Uber benefits from Waymo partnerships, Waymo’s independent expansions, such as a launch in Miami and growing ridership in Los Angeles and the Bay Area sans Uber’s help, underscore its competitive edge.
Uber Explains Why Drivers May See Slightly Different Fares for Similar Trips

Uber recently addressed concerns from an investigation examining alleged algorithmic wage discrepancies among its drivers through a detailed blog post. An investigation conducted last year by RSG Senior Contributor Sergio Avedian and Show Me The Money Club, in partnership with More Perfect Union, examined alleged algorithmic wage discrepancies between Uber drivers.
The investigation highlighted wage variations where drivers noticed different fares for seemingly identical trips, sparking concerns over algorithmic fairness.
Uber’s response emphasized factors like GPS discrepancies, surge pricing, and dynamic app updates as non-discriminatory reasons for the fare differences.
Uber reiterated that their fare algorithms are not personalized based on drivers’ personal characteristics, device types, or past behavior.

Uber Improves User Experience for Riders with Service Animals

SOURCE – The Verge
Uber has rolled out a new feature aimed at improving the experience for riders with service animals by allowing them to self-identify within the app, giving drivers advanced notice about the presence of a service animal.
The new setting allows service animal owners to fill out an eligibility form within the Uber app, signaling drivers about their service animal, though notification isn’t mandatory.
Uber said it offers protections against improper cleaning fees for service animal-related incidents.
Your take: Uber warns drivers against canceling rides due to service animals, with reminders that refusal is against the law, risking deactivation from the platform.
What are your thoughts on this? On one hand, it’s important to follow ADA guidelines, but it removes the flexibility rideshare drivers have as independent contractors. Reply to this email, tell us your thoughts, and we may feature your insights in the next edition of this newsletter!
