Diversifying Income Streams: How Rideshare Drivers Can Boost Earnings Beyond Standard Fares
By: Jay Cradeur
Relying solely on standard fares may limit a rideshare driver's earning potential. Exploring additional income avenues can provide financial stability and growth opportunities.
As a driver with 10 years and 32,000 rides, I have seen the glory days of rideshare driving fade like an old pair of worn denim jeans.
Yesterday, I heard a podcast discussing whether Tesla or Waymo will dominate the automated taxi market. We are most likely heading into a recession. More workers will be laid off.
What will they do for money? Many of them will take to Uber and Lyft driving, which means Uber and Lyft will not need to pay us as much.
It is time to take control of your life and broaden your horizons.
Background
The gig economy offers various platforms and services that drivers can tap into to supplement their income. By diversifying, drivers can mitigate the risks associated with fluctuating demand and platform-specific challenges.
For example, I have just started the process of creating a weekly newsletter. During one of my webinars, someone mentioned the concept of a “flywheel.”
For gig workers, the flywheel concept represents the compounding momentum that builds when multiple income streams feed and support one another. Just as a mechanical flywheel stores energy and makes systems more efficient over time, each gig a worker takes on—whether it is rideshare driving, food delivery, freelance writing, or tutoring—adds energy to the wheel.
The key is that these streams are not isolated. For example, a rideshare driver might promote an affiliate product to passengers or use downtime between rides to complete online tasks. As each stream generates income, experience, or connections, it fuels the next opportunity, creating a self-reinforcing cycle of productivity and earning potential that gains power the longer it spins.
Driving exclusively for one platform is like fishing with only one hook in the water. By signing up for both Uber and Lyft, drivers increase their chances of getting ride requests. This minimizes downtime and allows hard-working drivers to cherry-pick more profitable rides. You do not want to sit around waiting while someone else is out making money.
In my experience, switching between platforms based on demand patterns has saved me hours of idle time and put hundreds of extra dollars in my pocket each month. As Warren Buffett once said, "Never depend on a single income. Invest to create a second source." In our case, the second source is just a swipe away.
2. Explore Delivery Services
Food and package delivery platforms such as Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Postmates can keep you busy during slow rideshare periods. There is always a dinner rush or someone craving tacos at midnight.
I tried delivering for Uber Eats. Hated it. The smell of Jack In The Box at 8 AM in my car was all I could stomach. However, for many, delivery is just the ticket. Try it and see if you like it.
Delivery gigs tend to be less stressful, and there is no need to make small talk. As the old saying goes, "Do not put all your eggs in one basket." When rides dry up, deliveries can tide you over.
If your vehicle qualifies, offering luxury ride options like Uber Black or Lyft Lux can significantly boost your income. These rides attract clients who value comfort and are willing to pay for it. Cleanliness, punctuality, and professionalism become your branding.
You can also operate outside the platform. Print business cards and offer direct airport rides to passengers you trust. You will often make double what Uber or Lyft would have paid. I have had passengers thank me for the reliability and peace of mind.
When a passenger books a private ride with you, they know which car you will drive, who you are, and that you will be on time. That kind of certainty comes at a price, which means you can make significantly more per hour. As Hemingway wrote, "There is no friend as loyal as a book." Your regulars will become as loyal as any reader.
4. Rent Out Vehicle Advertising Space
Turn your car into a moving billboard. Companies will pay you to display ads on your vehicle, providing passive income. This may require no extra effort other than applying a decal.
In addition, consider placing a tablet in the backseat. Platforms like Play Octopus pay drivers to entertain passengers with trivia and ads.
The tablet keeps people occupied, leading to higher ratings and better tips. Every small stream contributes to the river.
5. Provide Specialized Transportation
Not every passenger has the same needs. Offering pet-friendly rides or transportation for people with disabilities sets you apart. These niche services often face less competition and can earn you devoted customers.
For example, one of my regulars was a blind woman with a guide dog. I picked her up once, treated her with care, and if I offered a private service, she would have signed up to have me pick her up off-platform for weekly errands. Word spreads fast in tight-knit communities. Finding these unique angles can set your wheel in motion.
6. Develop and Monetize a New Skill
Driving provides the flexibility to pursue other passions. I started learning day trading during my downtime during the pandemic. It met all my criteria: portable, low cost to start, and scalable. Now, it is a secondary income stream that outpaces my driving.
I also write and produce a Grey Surge newsletter for men over 50. It uses my storytelling skills and video editing experience to create content. Y
ou have your gifts. You may be a great photographer, web designer, or tutor. Whatever it is, invest in that. As Steve Jobs said, "The only way to do great work is to love what you do."
Key Takeaways
Rideshare driving is a great foundation, but should not be your entire financial house. Build extensions. Diversify your efforts. The more streams you create, the steadier your income becomes.
The road is long, but with the right mindset, it can be paved with opportunity. Keep moving. Keep building. Let your flywheel spin. Be safe out there on the road.
