Data Shows Robotaxis Are Already Cutting Into Driver Pay

New data from Gridwise Analytics reveals human drivers in robotaxi-active cities are earning significantly less than their counterparts in non-robotaxi markets, with hourly wages dropping 3.8% to 6.9% year-over-year in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, and Phoenix. Meanwhile, rideshare markets without robotaxis saw a slight 1.0% pay increase, indicating the impact is localized to cities with autonomous vehicle operations.

  • The study also shows incentive payments have plummeted by over 64% in LA and Phoenix, while utilization rates declined in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

  • Austin drivers reported the most dramatic impact, with some veteran drivers seeing 30-40% earnings declines since Waymo’s arrival.

  • Survey data shows one-third of drivers are concerned about AV expansion, with many considering multi-apping or switching to delivery platforms less affected by autonomous vehicles.

Waymo Receives NYC Approval for Self-Driving Taxi Pilot

Waymo, the self-driving taxi company owned by Google parent company Alphabet, has received a permit to test eight autonomous vehicles in Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn through September, though they cannot pick up passengers during the pilot. Industry advocates and some politicians are raising concerns about regulation and the long-term effects on for-hire drivers.

  • The pilot allows Waymo vehicles to operate only south of Central Park and select Downtown Brooklyn zones.

  • Safety advocates and the city’s taxi union are pushing back against New York’s pilot with Waymo, citing concerns about safety, transparency, and job security for drivers.

  • Waymo has spent over $630,000 lobbying city officials since 2020 to support autonomous vehicle operations.

  • NYC laws still require human operators, so full rollout of robotaxis would need new legislation.

In a recent interview with Sherwood News, Lyft CEO David Risher outlined the company’s strategy for integrating robotaxis, while addressing surge pricing and the future economics of robotaxi services. Risher emphasized that while robotaxis will play a growing role, human drivers remain essential for the foreseeable future, particularly in complex urban environments.

  • Risher said the company is exploring ways to reduce surge pricing through better demand prediction and supply management.

  • Risher discussed the economic challenges of robotaxi deployment, including high operational costs and limited geographic coverage.

  • Like Uber, Lyft is focusing on strategic partnerships rather than building its own autonomous vehicle technology.

Uber Expands Cash Payment Option Despite Driver Safety Concerns

Uber has expanded its cash payment pilot program to dozens more cities, including Los Angeles, San Diego, Tampa, and Jacksonville, allowing riders to pay drivers directly with physical currency. While the feature aims to serve underbanked passengers without credit cards or bank accounts, drivers express concerns about safety risks and operational complications.

  • Some cities that introduced cash payments saw spikes in driver robberies, as occurred in São Paulo after Uber’s 2016 rollout in Brazil.

  • The system requires riders to verify their identity and drivers to maintain good feedback ratings, with Uber handling change through app credits and collecting its commission by debiting future driver earnings.

  • Female drivers particularly worry about safety risks when carrying cash, especially during night shifts.

Uber Eats has agreed to pay $15 million to settle charges with Seattle over alleged violations of the city’s delivery worker protection laws. The settlement addresses claims that the company failed to comply with minimum pay requirements and other labor protections for food delivery drivers.

  • The agreement includes both financial penalties and commitments to improve compliance with Seattle’s gig worker regulations.

  • The settlement represents one of the largest enforcement actions under Seattle’s delivery worker protection ordinance.

  • Uber Eats must implement new systems to ensure proper pay calculations and worker protections.
