In Atlanta, some Uber users are consistently canceling rides until matched with one of Waymo’s self-driving cars via Uber’s app, according to a Business Insider report. Some riders decline as many as twenty human drivers on average before receiving a Waymo, demonstrating growing enthusiasm for autonomous vehicles.

  • Uber’s partnership with Waymo launched in Atlanta in June within a 65-square-mile zone.

  • However, nationally, surveyed riders are still hesitant: last year, most respondents said they wouldn’t use fully autonomous vehicles . Safety concerns linger among much of the public, especially outside large urban centers.

Meanwhile, in urban centers, some passengers prefer robotaxis over human-driven vehicles because they are more comfortable and feel safer.

Uber is surveying Brazilian users about a proposed insurance program that would compensate riders for trip delays, driver cancellations, missed flights, and even lost items. The program is in early testing, with no announced plans yet for U.S. markets.

  • If launched, these coverage options would be available as small per-ride add-ons; for example, riders could receive a payout if a driver-caused delay leads to a missed flight or significant disruption.

  • Proposed insurance fee in Brazil is about $0.04 per ride, subject to change. Similar policies in Mumbai reimburse riders about $85 for missed flights.

  • The crackdown included inspections for proper driver identification, vehicle paperwork, and adherence to local safety regulations. Common violations included missing documentation and inadequate vehicle maintenance .

  • Many drivers are drawn to off-app arrangements amid shrinking margins from platform fees. Passengers usually agree because they also pay less than what Uber is charging.

Fisker, formerly a failed electric vehicle startup, is experiencing renewed relevance in New York City after its cars found a second life serving rideshare fleets. Despite Fisker’s well-publicized bankruptcy, multiple companies have acquired its vehicles for use in rideshare operations, leveraging their EV infrastructure and city-friendly design.

  • Fisker EVs are being retrofitted and maintained by fleet operators rather than private owners.

  • Industry watchers say this reflects broader trends toward repurposing EV assets for shared mobility. Market analysts note this model could offer a blueprint for other defunct auto startups.

Minnesota Public Radio featured Sergio Avedian and Joe Strandell, The Rideshare Guy contributors, who discussed the pressing issues facing rideshare drivers: falling earnings, rising company commission rates, and increasing concerns around safety for both drivers and passengers.

  • With Uber and Lyft taking a larger share of each fare, drivers are seeing their real incomes decrease while facing more downtime due to a surge in driver numbers, a trend that has cut utilization rates to just 20-30 minutes of actual rides per hour.

  • The pool of drivers continues to grow, leaving many waiting for rides as the total ride demand remains unchanged, further squeezing driver earnings.

  • Safety remains a key topic, with growing reports of drivers facing disrespect or robbery, and also passenger complaints about inappropriate driver behavior.
