AI Is Going to Take Over Your Job as a Rideshare Driver - Make Changes Now!

Where were you the first time you heard about real AI?

Not the iRobot or Skynet AI, but the ChatGPT, Claude, Midjourney AI that you can use right now?

As a gig worker, you may think that there is no way that AI could possibly steal your job, and you might be right.

But you’re probably wrong.

I asked AI to write this article for me, check out the opening paragraph it gave:

“Let’s be real: self-driving cars aren’t science fiction anymore. They’re already on the road in cities like San Francisco and Phoenix. While they haven’t taken over rideshare driving just yet, it’s not a matter of if—it’s a matter of when.

If you rely on driving for Uber, Lyft, or delivery services as your main income, it’s time to start thinking ahead. The goal isn’t to panic. It’s to plan.

Here's how to future-proof your income before AI and automation fully arrive.”

Now, I don’t care for that writing, but some people don’t care for my writing either.

Realistically, AI can generate and “do my job” at least somewhat.

What can we do to continue to make money in this sci-fi reality we now seem to live in?

Stay Hungry, Drive More, Save More

A few years ago, when I stopped working “real jobs” to do full-time freelance and gig work, my father-in-law gave me some amazing, simple advice.

Stay hungry.

When you have no money in the bank account, hustle hard and make some.

When you have money, hustle hard and make some like you have none.

Working for yourself, you’ll never know when the work will dry up, so work when you can.

As a gig worker, you’re going to have amazing days, and you’re going to have awful days when you make almost nothing.

Right now, when you can, get out there and make money. Don’t be content with having “enough,” instead, make more than you think you need.

When you have that, don’t let it sit in a bank account, do something with it.

Invest in dividend stocks, real estate, a vending machine business, anything that will make even more money with your money.

I will add one thing. Do not burn out.

Yes, work more than you think you need, but not more than you can. You will be no good if you have to spend all your money on hospital visits once you crash.

Diversify Your Skills, Do More Gig Work

For most gig workers, taking passengers is the only thing we think of. We might also do delivery driving, or we only do delivery driving.

But you can learn a new skill and still do gig work. In fact, some of the best gigs I’ve done come from skills totally unrelated to owning and driving a car.

Skilled Trades

Do you know anyone who works in a trade like electrical, construction, or roofing? They are all slammed with work.

Do you know how to do any of those? Are you willing to learn?

It isn’t glamorous work, but it’s needed. AI is not going to be able to take many of these types of jobs.

What is even better is that you don’t have to get a job working for a company. You can take your own jobs, or join an app like TaskRabbit where you get offers for different tasks.

Medical Fields

Another area where you can get some quick training and start working is the medical field. AI will never fully take over the medical field, we will always need people doing things to help other people.

Obviously there are doctors and nurses that take years to get and do, but you can do things like medical coding, pharmacy tech, CNA in much less time.

Just like a skilled trade, there are apps or temp agencies that work specifically with medical professionals for short-term jobs.

Last year, I was able to use my pharmacy license for a few weeks working at a pharmacy that needed some extra help. It was some of the easiest pharmacy work I’ve ever done, and it made me a few thousand dollars. After the job was done, I went back to my normal non-employee life.

Unskilled Labor

I’m about to mention work that is not easy. I didn’t name them “unskilled”, that’s just what they are called. I understand they take skill and hard work, so please don’t call me out in the comments.

Being a server at a restaurant, helping people move, walking dogs, or house sitting are all types of work you can do that

Qwick, Rover, and TrustedHouseSitters all allow you to find this type of work without having to leave your gig work to do it.

If You Can’t Beat Them…

Finally, if you want to make sure AI doesn’t steal your job, work with AI.

I know absolutely nothing about coding, AI is probably smarter than me in a lot of ways with that.

But people are making a lot of money using AI by learning how to prompt AI correctly.

AI isn’t very smart at doing exactly what you want it to do.

You may explain it perfectly fine to someone else, but AI gives you the entirely wrong thing. The prompts you use, how you explain what you want AI to do, are crucial to the success of using them.

Though AI is going to take jobs, maybe everyone who’s reading this, it will also create new ones.

Don’t let AI scare you, see how it can help you, and if it can’t, see how it will hurt you and take steps now to make it so it can’t.
